Big banks have accelerated the pace of patents filed for AI and AI-related innovations, according to new data from consultancy Evident. There were 854 new patent filings in the year ending June 2022, up 21% from the same period the year prior, according to Evident. There are also knock-on effects, like how a strong patent culture can help banks stand out in the war for talent. This patent data, pulled from Google's patent database, accounts for the 12-month period ending in June 2022. JPMorgan Chase, which leads Evident's AI research index, follows with 120 AI and AI-related patent filings.

Why doesn’t the US have more passenger trains?
  + stars: | 2023-11-25 | by ( Samantha Delouya | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +12 min
Today, the United States’ passenger rail system is an echo of its former self, with swathes of the network unused or surrendered to freight. In 1970, President Richard Nixon signed the Rail Passenger Service Act, which removed the requirement that private rail companies provide passenger service. Mike Segar/ReutersBut many American towns and cities have lost access to passenger trains. Can passenger trains make a comeback? André 3000, the unpredictable rapper, producer and songwriter best known as one-half of Outkast, is finally releasing a solo album. Instead, “New Blue Sun,” due out Friday, “is an entirely instrumental album centered around woodwinds,” according to an announcement on Tuesday. “I’ve been interested in winds for a long time, so it was just a natural progression for me to go into flutes,” André, 48, said in the announcement. “I just like messing with instruments and I gravitated mostly toward wind.”The artist, born André Benjamin, last released an album with Outkast in 2006: “Idlewild,” the soundtrack to the duo’s movie musical. “Speakerboxxx/The Love Below,” the group’s Grammy-winning double album, arrived three years earlier.

Experts say that this road feature reduces traffic and car crashes. I research transportation engineering, particularly traffic safety and traffic operations. The birth of the modern roundabout came with yield-at-entry regulations, adopted in some towns in Great Britain in the 1950s. The first modern roundabout in the U.S. was built in Summerlin, on the west side of Las Vegas, in 1990. Ever since, the construction of modern roundabouts in the U.S. has picked up steam.

AI and cloud tech are giving some banks an edge over competitors and enticing brand loyalty. Traditional banks that ignore this reality risk losing loyal customers to digital banks that have emerged over the past few years, research suggests. Digital transformation is a must for banksWith online banking now the norm, digital transformation is no longer optional for banks. Legacy banking systems were not designed to provide the banking experience that people expect today," she said. As a result, banking customers and employees can view transactions in real time and deliver "a more seamless and personalized experience" for all stakeholders, she added.

The American theater is on the verge of collapse. The Humana Festival of New American Plays, a vital launching pad for such great playwrights as Lynn Nottage and Will Eno over the past four decades, was canceled this year. This season the Williamstown Theater Festival, one of our most important summer festivals, will consist of only one fully produced work, alongside an anemic offering of staged readings. The Lookingglass, a major anchor of Chicago’s theater scene, is halting production for the year. Nonprofit theaters are where many recent hits — including “A Strange Loop” and “Hamilton,” both of which won Pulitzer Prizes — started out.

Music for (Waiting in) Airports
  + stars: | 2023-07-18 | by ( ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +2 min
Dear listeners,If you’re anything like me, you’ve already spent way too much of this summer in airports. In the mid-1970s, he got the idea for one of his most enduring works during a long, stressful flight delay at an airport in Cologne, Germany. He began experimenting with this concept, and it eventually led to the gorgeous and indefatigably useful “Music for Airports” (1978), his first declared work of what he called “ambient” music. I’m not saying your flight delay needs to be as productive as Eno’s; I won’t judge if you fail to conceive an entirely new genre of music before boarding ends. But if you still need something to listen to when it’s done, there’s always “Music for Airports.” (And Jon Pareles’s playlist of Eno’s 15 best ambient tracks.)

First Favorite Songs Are Like Sonic Baby Pictures

— my dad gamely taped the closing credits for me on a blank VHS. You can learn a lot about a person from asking about their first favorite songs — it’s the sonic equivalent of looking at someone’s baby pictures. (Petty also co-wrote “Cheer Down,” and Jeff Lynne helped produce both of those songs — so clearly the Traveling Wilburys had a hold on my musical taste from an early age.) U2: “Zoo Station”After it came out in late 1991, U2’s angsty, glammy “Achtung Baby” was an absolute staple in my parents’ steel-blue Ford Taurus. No matter what U2 does or how many albums it forcefully installs on my iPhone, “Achtung Baby” will always have a special place in my heart for being one of the first records to freak me out — in a good way.

Brian Eno is planning his first-ever solo tour

CNN —At the age of 75, legendary musician and producer Brian Eno is planning to embark on his first-ever solo tour. “‘Ships’ features an orchestral adaptation of Eno’s acclaimed 2016 album, ‘The Ship’ as well as new and classic Eno compositions,” the post reads. Known for his ambient compositions, Eno was a founding member of British art rock band Roxy Music, which shot to fame in the early 1970s. He will appear alongside Baltic Sea Philharmonic, with Estonian-American conductor Kristjan Järvi orchestrating and conducting a performance commissioned by the Venice Biennale, the Instagram post adds. “This performance marks Brian Eno’s first live tour in a five decade solo career and also his first appearance with orchestra,” it continues.

The Chinese Embassy in Washington called self-ruled Taiwan "an inalienable part of China" and said the one-China principle was an "overwhelming trend" internationally. When Taiwan temporarily averted a split with Honduras after President Xiomara Castro took office in January 2022, U.S. State Department officials remained wary. The Biden administration is also keeping a close eye on tiny Belize for any cracks in its Taiwan relationship. Two U.S. officials said Washington was putting less stock in Taiwan maintaining its diplomatic allies in favor of efforts to increase its participation in international organizations. While denied a seat in the United Nations, Taiwan is a member of the WTO and the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum.
Venice Biennale to honour British musician Brian Eno
  + stars: | 2023-03-08 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +1 min
ROME, March 8 (Reuters) - Brian Eno, the renowned British musician and visual artist who has worked with Talking Heads, U2 and David Bowie, will receive the Golden Lion for lifetime achievement from the Venice Biennale 2023, the organiser said on Wednesday. Eno, 74, who describes himself as a 'non-musician', came to prominence in the early 1970s as a founding member of the band Roxy Music. He is best known for his contributions to ambient music and work in rock, pop and electronica. The music department of the Venice Biennale decided to honour Eno "for his research into the quality, beauty and diffusion of digital sound and for his conception of the acoustic space as a compositional instrument," the statement said. Eno will be given the award at a ceremony on Oct.22 as part of Biennale Musica 2023 in Venice.
Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg hasn't ruled out running for the White House again. He's in the spotlight and the hot seat far more than most other transportation secretaries before him. The search-engine test shows Buttigieg has become a high-profile target who finds himself in the spotlight far more than most other transportation secretaries before him. However, no transportation secretary has likely entered the job with more star power. After he strode onto the stage of The Late Show last fall, host Stephen Colbert noted that not many transportation secretaries have been guests on late night talk shows.
Brian Eno Reveals the Hidden Purpose of All Art

I think I’m still answering it. I’m absolutely fascinated by this question, because I think I have an answer, and I don’t think it has ever been well answered. Since we’re talking about how things work: How do you want your new album to work for people? You have to take that on board as being one of the things that’s happening in culture and quite different from the story that we’re generally hearing. I don’t think many people take that as seriously as I do.
But many campaigners believe King Charles III presents a unique opportunity: They think most royalism was actually fondness for the widely loved queen, and he — a new, less popular king — won't inherit this support. The English Civil War resulted in the beheading of King Charles I, before the "Glorious Revolution" saw English elites effectively choose a new monarch who gave lawmakers more rights. William, Prince of Wales, and Catherine, Princess of Wales, look at floral tributes to the queen at Sandringham Estate on Thursday. Some observers agree that Charles should be viewed in an entirely new light now that he is king. “The monarchy knows statesmanship is about knowing to give up what you can no longer keep,” she said.
